The event which is set to hold on Monday 22nd January 2018 at the Obafemi Awolowo University Oduduwa hall is set to be graced by notable personalities in the country as speakers. Amongst them includes: Rochas Okorocha, the Executive Governor of Imo state; Femi Fani-Kayode, Former Nigerian Minister for Aviation; Mr Gbenga Oyebode, Legal Practitioner and Senior Advocate of Nigeria; Justice Funmi Oke, The Chief Justice of Lagos State. Other renowned personalities like His Royal Majesty Oba Adedokun Abolarin, the Orangun of Oke-Ila and a host of others will register their presence at the event.
The theme of the lecture is “Nigeria yesterday, today and the Future: Pragmatic and Sustainable Solution to the Unity, National Integration and Development”
Speaking as regards this year’s annual lecture, the President of the Law Students’ Society, Obafemi Awolowo University, mentioned that the annual lecture was organized not just to honour Prof. Popoola but to serve as a platform for the discussion of national issues, hence the reason why the invited speakers and guests for the event were selected from different walks of life.
“This year’s edition is the second edition of the annual lecture, and it is one of the events in Nigeria that looks at contemporary issues in Nigeria with the aim of proffering pragmatic solutions. We are looking at how to resolve issues we have in the society right now, so we are inviting people from all walks of life to share their practical and probable solutions to all the contemporary problems Nigeria face today.
“The annual Prof. Popoola lecture is not like any other public lecture as the solutions and recommendations given by speakers at the event are always put forward for implementation and execution. This year’s lecture will be centered on Nigeria as a country, the issues affecting her, national development and probable solutions to Nigeria’s issues”, he said.
When asked the rationale behind the theme of the event, he said, “Normally, lectures like this most times have academic themes; however, the theme for this year’s lecture is not an academic one stricto-senso . The academic world itself is looking at how to be involved in the running of this country; they don’t just want to discuss theories anymore but to see how to pract ically be involved in solving Nigeria’s problems. The theme of this year’s lecture is meant to carry everybody in the society along. It is an all-encompassing lecture, almost away from the norms”.
Mr Tobi also commented on the motive behind the choice of speakers where he stated that the invited speakers for the event were selected due to their knowledge on certain contemporary national issues.
“The reasons for the selection of our speakers are not far-fetched. These persons are great minds with in-depth knowledge of topical Nigerian matters; although, most persons would wonder why we have Governor Okorocha and Mr Fani-Kayode as part of our speakers because they think that they are quite ‘controversial’. To be sincere with you, Governor Okorocha of Imo state is one person that is versed in contemporary national issues, same for Fani-Kayode. These men are great men and people need to hear their views, opinions, analysis, examination, and remedies towards contemporary Nigerian Issues”, he stated.
This year’s edition is the second edition of the annual event. the first edition held last year and the keynote speaker was Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Former Nigerian Vice-President
