JAC Strike : Don’t Harass Our Members, ASUU Warns Striking Workers

Academic Staffs Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned striking workers in various Varsities of harming lecturers currently going about their duties.

Ogunyemi was speaking against the backdrop of the
recent protest embarked upon by the three non teaching
labour unions of the University of Lagos, which allegedly resulted in
the harassment of some ASUU members.
The striking unions comprises of the Senior Staff
Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non
Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National
Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The three unions under the aegis of the
Joint Actions Committee (JAC) are currently on what they
had described as ‘total, comprehensive and indefinite’

Ogunyemi said that it had come to the notice of the union
that some of his members were attacked and injured by
members of the striking unions at the university of Lagos
on Monday, while going about their duties lawfully to
further press home their demands.

The ASUU scribe warned that union would not take it lightly adding that
already, a warning signal had been sent to their striking
“We have asked the Vice Chancellors of our universities to
tackle any such action and bring to book, all those
involved in such violent conduct .
“They must be able to apprehend persons who want to
truncate efforts of lecturers from discharging their duties
“The Vice Chancellors are the chief security officers of
these institutions and by that status, must be able to tell
workers the limit of their activities within the confines of
the university, at any given point in time
“No one is stopping them from prosecuting their struggle,
as far as they are not preventing lawful activities of other
workers particularly ASUU members.
“Hence, we will like to warn that the union, henceforth will
not take it lightly if they should cause any further harm to
any of our members whether in the university of Lagos or
any other ones at that,” the ASUU boss said.

There has been continued Disagreement in Nigerian Varsities over sharing formula of the 23billion Naira Earned Allowance released by the Federal Government recently.
